Richard Gibbs is well known across New York City as a diehard community activists, and after years of spearheading a tenants association and managing electoral campaigns, he is more involved than ever in the workings of his community.
Richard his wife, Brenda first took passionate interest in community affairs when they lived in Brooklyn. They create the 415 Lefferts Avenue Tenants Association, to which Richard was elected President for the 12 years that his family lived there.
In 1978, Gibbs family relocated to St. Albans, bringing the same level of commitment and dedication with them to Southeast Queens. He opened a real estate company on Linden Blvd, in the office of his uncle Supreme Court Justice Richard Rutledge.
Although real estate kept Gibbs busy, he continued working as a Transit Police Officer, a position he held for seven years and retired as a Court Officer in 1996.
As president of Richard Gibbs Realty, he has been able to transfer his grassroots activism on behalf of tenants’ rights into his career. Though his real estate company, Richard has helped homeowners and homebuyers make decisions that will benefit them in the long run and create a rising level of homeownership in the community in which he has served for 32 years.
Thought out his 32 years in real estate, he graduated from New York University. He earned prestigious designations such as GRI (Graduate of the Realtors Institute) and SRES (Senior Real Estate Specialist). He is presently Chairperson if the “Independent Real Estate Brokers of New York, Inc.”(IREB) He is also a Director of the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island, (MLS). With all of his involvement in real estate he still finds time to give back to the community.
His service to the community consists of President of the Queens Community Democratic Club for 5 years, Vice President of Special Events of the “100 Black Men of Long Island”, also the First Vice President of the “United Black Men of Queens, Inc.”, Life Member and Executive Board Member of the Jamaica Branch NAACP where he serves as Co-Chairman of the Housing Committee and also on the Prison Project Committee. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Cambria Heights and a member of the Alpha Phi Alphi Fraternity.
Richard is a strong advocate of keeping the money in the community; that is why he is referred to as “The Community Broker”. As a result he received numerous community service awards including, the Certificate of Recognition from State Senator Malcolm Smith, the City Council Citation from Councilman Leroy Comrie, the Everyday Hero Award from Kiwanis Club of Hollis, the 2003 “President’s Award” from the United Black Men of Queens, Inc., the 2007 “Community Service Award” from the United Black Men of Queens, Inc., and the Lifetime community Service Award from Youth and Tennis, Inc.
